August 10, 2015
One of the world’s greatest leaders in the fight against anti-Semitism will deliver the 2015 Anti-Defamation Commission-Gandel Oration in Melbourne on August 25 and in Sydney on August 27.
Rabbi Abraham Cooper, Associate Dean of the Los Angeles based Simon Wiesenthal Centre, will speak on “Global anti-Semitism, Holocaust Denial, and The War Against Israel”
Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement: “The ADC and Gandel Philanthropy are proud and honoured to host Rabbi Abraham Cooper, a close friend of famed Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal and a world-renowned leader and warrior in the never-ending fight against anti-Semitism. A respected voice of reason and knowledge, for more than 30 years Rabbi Cooper has shown unwavering and remarkable courage in speaking up against all forms of racism and discrimination and has made a unique and outstanding contribution to the lives of many people.
Rabbi Cooper is a tenacious, fearless, and deeply admired champion for Jewish and human rights, who has dedicated his life to countering the defamation of the Jewish people and the delegitimization of Israel, and to nobly promoting cultural and religious tolerance, education and understanding around the world. It is not often that Melbourne and Sydney audiences have the opportunity to see and hear from a person widely recognized as a trailblazer, pioneer and a global authority on digital hate and internet terrorism. Rabbi Cooper regularly meets with world leaders, including Pope Benedict XVI, UN Secretary General Ban Ki- Moon, presidents and prime ministers, and he also testified before the United Nations, the US Senate, the Japanese Diet and the French Parliament.
Our last two orations were sold out weeks in advance, and attracted more than 2000 people, and I have no doubt that this event will be a compelling and memorable occasion that is not to be missed.”
A founding member of Israel’s Global Forum on anti-Semitism, Rabbi Cooper has been interviewed on CNN and Fox News, and his editorials have appeared in The New York Times, Time, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the Miami Herald, USA Today, the Chicago Tribune, the Globe and Mail, National Post, Le Monde, the Japan Times and The Straits Times. He supervises the Center’s Digital Terrorism and Hate Project, and created the Center’s innovative AskMusa.com, a multilingual website designed to familiarize Moslems around the world to the values of the Jewish people, its history and Faith.
Rabbi Cooper’s trailblazing work in Asia has helped counter negative stereotypes about Jews and open new venues in dialogue and intergroup relations in Japan, South Korea, The People’s Republic of China, India, and Indonesia. He was a leader of the Center’s mission to China that brought the first Jewish-sponsored exhibition to the world’s most populous nation.
The ADC-Gandel Oration will take place on August 25, 7:45pm, St Kilda Town Hall.
