When a swastika was graffitied on the grounds of Yarra Primary School, principal Tracy Hammill swiftly removed all traces of the symbol and sought to educate her students.
To commend her efforts, chairman of the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) Dvir Abramovich presented her with the inaugural Standing Up to Bigotry Award, the first school to ever be present with the recognition.
Thanking Hammill, Abramovich said, “We applaud Yarra Primary School for standing up to bigotry and for saying yes to Australia without hate. Helping to foster respect for diversity, and bulding respectful and inclusive schools and communities is at the heart of what we do.
“This award recongnises that schools can inspire and empower their students to never be bystanders, and celebrates schools that make a difference by sending the powerful message that anti-Semitism and racism will never be tolerated”
Hammill said “Yarra Primary School is delighted to receive this award”
