Today, Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC), presented Yarra Primary School principal Tracy Hammill with the ADC’s first ever ‘Standing up to Bigotry Award’. The award was given to the school for swiftly removing a swastika that was discovered on school grounds.
Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:
“We applaud Yarra Primary School for standing up to bigotry and for saying yes to an Australia without hate. Helping to foster respect for diversity, and building respectful and inclusive schools and communities is at the heart of what we do. This award recognises that schools can inspire and empower their students to never be bystanders, and celebrates schools that make a difference by sending the powerful message that anti-Semitism and racism will never be tolerated. We are thankful that Yarra Primary is not only making a positive impact through their anti-bias activism, but have joined the ADC in reinforcing the importance of fighting prejudice and discrimination.”
Principal Tracy Hammill said: “Yarra Primary School is delighted to receive this award. It reinforces our values of Caring, Respect and Commitment. We are happy to be part of a coalition of advocates for inclusiveness and diversity in schools.
The Anti-Defamation Commission, founded in 1979, is Australia’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through educational programs that combat bigotry, prejudice and all forms of hatred.
