The B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) has welcomed the commencement of the trial in Germany of Reinhold Hanning, a 94-year-old former guard at Auschwitz, who has been charged with 170,000 counts of being an accessory to murder.
Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, issued the following statement:
“We commend the German authorities for once again bringing to trial a suspected Nazi officer and for making it clear that there is no safe haven for Nazi killers no matter how old they. This case is another small measure of justice for the victims and survivors, and sends an unequivocal message that although 70 years have passed since the end of the Shoah, the day of judgement awaits the remaining Nazi perpetrators and their accomplices. There can be no statute of limitations on justice for the unspeakable atrocities of the Shoah, and as we have said repeatedly, perpetrators of the Holocaust must be pursued to the end and must be held accountable for their crimes. Such trials give hope and comfort to victims of other acts of genocide that their tormentors will be apprehended and will be sentenced for their evil deeds. With the number of survivors and witnesses diminishing by the day, this trial is a timely reminder that the Holocaust must never fade into the pages of history, and that each nation has a responsibility to confront the ever growing scourge of anti-Semitism, intolerance and hate.”
